Putting Together a Team That Wins (Archie Ratliff)

Here’s a few thoughts about hiring the right staff and building a Team that wins.
1.     The Senior Pastor must have a vision of where he believes God wants him to take the church.  Too many senior pastors are weak in Leadership. This only leads to chaos if you hire a staff member and you have not properly conveyed your vision to him.  Even though staff members have been called of God and trained in our colleges, they are often clueless of what their role is!
A clear philosophy and ministry mindset must be conveyed to a staff member.  If the Pastor and Staff member aren’t on the same page (philosophically) there will be trouble ahead.
There can be only one vision caster!  That is the Senior Pastor.  He sets the tone for style of worship.  He sets the tone for the Youth Ministry.  The Senior Pastor is not a dictator; but he is to be the Key Leader over every arm of the church.
2.     If the staff is to function properly, he must have the ability to hire and fire staff.  A church which is given the final vote on these two key issues will bring frustration to the Pastor and the staff member.  Any other means of making a staff member accountable will foster chaos.
3.    I believe both Pastor and his staff must continue to get further training! We need to attend seminars, conferences and even go back to school and further our formal education.  Our church pays for our staff members Graduate work.  It’s amazing how much it enhances our ministry.
4.    I believe we need to expect and engender loyalty from both sides of the equation.  I am fiercely loyal to my staff.  I make sure they are paid well.  I ask our church to run complaints about the staff through me.  They can’t please everyone.  I stand up for my staff and never allow people to berate them.  One way I believe I engender loyalty from my staff is to publically praise them for a job well done.  I want people to feel our staff is smart, hard-working, and are resourceful. (Note to Senior Pastors:  Don’t be jealous of your staff.)  If they look good, you look good.
I believe loyalty to the Senior Pastor isn’t being taught in some of our colleges.  Staff member, if you aren’t loyal to your pastor, you will fail in your ministry!  It’s your job to make him look good.  You ought to lighten his load, not add to it!
Well, I’ll go deeper later on.  For now, let’s build a Team that Wins!

This is one of the areas where I do not excel. From now on, this will be what I use during and after the hiring process. Thanks Archie. I look forwarding to seeing you and talking with you more at the meeting in Cinci!
