About 5 years ago I started taking 3 weeks off every summer. I’ve been amazed at the response I get from fellow pastors about this. Many say they could never do that. Well I am on year number 14 at the same church, which by the way is the only church I have ever served at. I believe I have been able to stay this long because I’ve been willing to take this time off. I think this is one of the healthiest things I do as a pastor. I don’t even start to relax until the second week. What is so amazinvg about this time is the opportunity I have for three solid weeks to focus on my wife and kids without any interruptions. That is hard to accomplish at home. I think a lot of pastors are concerned to be away that long because they are not sure how the church will do. The church will be fine! As a matter of fact it will be better off. This time off will give you and the congregation a much needed break. As I write this blog I am sitting 20 yards from the edge of the water and my kids are having a blast. I am on week two and loving it. Are you taking any time off this summer?

Great advice Jimmy. This year I’m taking the entire month of July off and I can’t wait. Been preaching 4 Sunday services for year and half now. Last year I took 3 weeks off and Jimmy, you’re right, the church was fine when I got back. Enjoy your time off, I know I will.

Jimmy,
I’m jealous. I could probably to this but I always find a reason not to. I think the myth of indispensability destroys a lot of ministers. Thanks for the inspiration. I’m going to try this . . . if I don’t chicken out.
